Kevin Williamson was my incredible art teacher at Tangaroa College! I had the privilege of being his student for three amazing years, and I absolutely loved every moment with him!
I am thrilled to share this short piece to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Williamson's incredible work, time, and care for me, even when he didn't know how low my self-esteem was. Mr. Williamson recognized my 'potential' and saw something in me that I couldn't see myself. Though it didn't hit me right away, eventually, the realization dawned on me. Art is my passion; it's what I naturally excel at, requiring little effort while bringing me a sense of peace. It's been my refuge, a safe haven to escape from everything. Like all great teachers, he never stopped encouraging me. He was kind, genuine, and beloved by all the students. I would always see and hear the Pacific Island/Maori kids laughing and enjoying his humor. He dedicated so much time to us, welcoming us after school and during lunch breaks to work on art assignments. It was pure joy to be around him... too meke Mr. Williamson!
Check out this photo—it's one of the reports from him that I've treasured all these years! Even now, in my 50s, I can't imagine ever parting with it, lol. It means everything to me because I can still vividly recall Mr. Williamson's encouraging face and voice. Rest in peace, beautiful soul!
As an artist without formal qualifications or degrees, I now know what it takes to excel—simply be yourself! When faced with challenges, confront and overcome them. Prioritize if necessary, and focus on what you value most in life. Embrace new habits and methods, but never give up. Always remember those who have influenced your life, just as Mr. Williamson did for me.
Hey Kevin! I'm so grateful for your encouraging words and your belief in me. Thanks for the incredible 3 years of awesome Art classes—they're definitely among my all-time favorites!
Grateful ex-Tangaroa student. 274.
