TC school report: Art Class with Mr. Kevin Williamson
TC Report | Art Class | Mr. Williamson

Kevin Williamson was my incredible art teacher at Tangaroa College, and man, it was a massive privilege to be his student for three solid years. I absolutely loved every moment in his classroom.

I’m stoked to share this piece; In memory of Mr. Williamson to show some major love and appreciation for everything he did. He put in the work, the time, and the genuine care for me—even when he had no idea how low my self-esteem really was. Mr. Williamson recognized my ‘potential’ and saw something in me that I couldn't even see myself. It didn't hit me straight away, but eventually, the realization dawned on me.

Art is my passion; it’s what I naturally excel at. It’s that one thing that takes little effort but brings me total peace. It’s been my refuge—a safe haven when I needed to escape the noise of the world. Like all the greats, he never stopped encouraging me. He was kind, genuine, and the whole school loved him. I can still hear the Pacific Island and Maori kids cracking up at his humor. He gave us so much of his own time, welcoming us after school and during lunch breaks just so we could smash out our art assignments. It was pure joy to be around him... too meke Mr. Williamson!

Check out this photo—it’s one of the school reports from him that I’ve treasured all these years. Even now, in my 50s, I can’t imagine ever parting with it, lol. It means the world to me because I can still vividly recall his encouraging face and his voice. Rest in peace, beautiful soul!

As an artist without the fancy degrees or formal papers, I’ve learned that the secret to excelling is simple: just be yourself! When life throws challenges your way, confront them and overcome. Prioritize what matters and focus on what you value most. Embrace new ways of doing things, but never, ever give up. Always remember the ones who influenced your life and pushed you to be better, just like Mr. Williamson did for me.

Hey Kevin! I’m so grateful for your encouraging words and for believing in me when I didn't believe in myself. Thanks for those three years of awesome art classes—they're definitely among my all-time favorites! While I know all credit and glory goes to the One I answer to, I’m truly thankful He placed a teacher like you in my path to help me recognize the gift I was given. You played a massive part in my journey, and I’ll never forget that.

Grateful ex-Tangaroa student. 274.
